Over 70% of projects (across all industries) deliver 'unsatisfactory' results to the people who sponsor them and over a third of them are considered to be outright failures in that they never get implemented in real life. The following diagram shows some of the prominent reasons why projects deliver unsatisfactory results or fail outright.

PMI was founded in the USA in 1969 and has pioneered project management as a discipline with its PMBOK® Guide. A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge®, or the PMBOK® Guide, is a dynamic body of knowledge that is constantly updated and Fourth Edition is in current use. Over the years, PMI has expanded the framework to encompass program and portfolio management.
Project Management Professional (PMP®) is the leading certification provided by PMI® that recognizes an individual's efforts and commitment to professional project management discipline and has become the de-facto standard globally in this subject area.
With the very survival of organizations and governments depending on the outcomes of projects in healthcare, defense, research, economic development, security and other areas, many blue-chip companies as well as governments have made PMP® certification a criteria for employees progressing into managerial roles in their organizations.
As of June, 2009, there were over 460,000 PMP® certified professionals worldwide and the community expansion is gathering momentum as organizations realize the importance of giving their top performers the tools and knowledge to deliver successful projects. |
